The law
The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, financing, and advertising of housing on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status, or national origin. Many states and localities protect additional classes — including age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, military status, and lawful source of income.
